Meyer Nutrition Program
The Meyer Nutrition Plan combines a fully holistic approach to weight loss and wellbeing with highly personalized elite, concierge care. Created by renowned New York cardiologist and internist Mark Meyer, MD, FACP, FACC, our nutrition includes the most comprehensive health screening and management in Manhattan.
What Is the Meyer Nutrition Plan?
Nutrition and lifestyle are undoubtedly vital components of overall health and disease risk reduction. Research shows that cardiometabolic improvements can be reversed after going off the medication if not for changing behaviors and working on eating habits; in other words, relapse is common if not for continued lifestyle management. As part of our concierge membership, patients have access to nutritional services which actively promote mind-body work. The Meyer Nutrition Program is an integrative method that incorporates stress reduction, exercise recommendations, and individualized nutrition strategies that work with your lifestyle to most effectively and comprehensively support your health goals and improve your quality of life.
Our Nutrition & Lifestyle Approach To Weight Loss
Our nutrition philosophy is one that embodies a mind-body and holistic approach. What we eat does not exist in a vacuum: it is influenced by a myriad of factors including our mental health, stress levels, sleep quality, food access, cultural practices, and how we eat—i.e. compulsively, emotionally, mindlessly, or thoughtfully, enjoyably, intentionally. Our philosophy is that nutrition is individualized and nuanced. We believe that nutrition must be tailored to someone’s individual health concerns, lifestyle, habits, and goals. We zoom out to look at the big picture and then zoom in to focus on the details and numbers that matter. Instead of deprivation or a one-size fits all diet, we focus on a comprehensive lifestyle methodology that supports longevity. We aim to help patients feel empowered to make choices that allow them to feel their best without compromising their quality of life.
We believe that any patient aiming to lose weight or considering weight loss medication should work with a registered dietitian and have comprehensive cardiovascular screening. Weight is a health marker, and certainly not the only one. Alone, it does not paint a full picture of someone’s health. By doing a comprehensive screening, including factors like dietary habits, emotional triggers, social determinants of health, and medical conditions, each patient will be able to receive targeted and tailored medical, nutritional, and lifestyle recommendations.
With the increasing prevalence of GLP-1 medications, it’s especially important to ensure they are being used thoughtfully. We believe they can be beneficial when used by the right candidates—potential benefits span from cardiometabolic improvement, weight management, and even reduction of unhealthy behaviors like compulsive alcohol use—but many people are able to access this type of medication too easily and often without real medical supervision or discernment. Everyone’s health journey is different; by doing a thorough evaluation and baseline screening, we will help decide if these medications are for you, and then guide you in integrating their use into a complete lifestyle approach. These medications are a tool, but not a Band-Aid.
Working with a dietitian while on a GLP-1 medication will help optimize eating patterns and challenge the likelihood of such side effects occurring by focusing on intentional food choices and lifestyle behaviors. Working with a dietitian will also ensure that patients are addressing the root behaviors, such as emotional or compulsive eating, so that eating habits and relationship with food improve, irrespective of the medication. Comprehensive care will help make treatment more effective thus advancing patient health and improving success rates with regard to weight management and cardiovascular health.
